San Lazzaro degli Armeni island
The island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni (Saint Lazarus Armenian island) in Venice, Italy. The island is home to a monastery housing the Mekhitarist Order, a group of Benedictine monks of the Armenian Catholic Church. The monastery grounds feature a beautiful cloister, gardens, cypress trees, and white peacocks. San Lazzaro degli Armeni takes its name from a 12th century colony of lepers who found its isolation from the surrounding islands ideal for quarantined living. St Lazarus, the patron saint of lepers, was the man Jesus spoke of in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
