Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore
The cathedral of Florence, known in English as Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower, began construction in 1296 and was completed in 1436. The duomo, or cathedral, was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio while the dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The cathedral lies in the Florence historic center and is accompanied by Giotto's Campanile (bell tower, right) and the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistry of St. John, not pictured).
